Horace Odes 1.23
fourth Asclepiadean
Vitas inuleo me similis, Chloe,
You avoid me like a fawn, Chloe,
quaerenti pavidam montibus aviis
searching for its trembling mother in the pathless mountains
matrem non sine vano
not without an empty fear
aurarum et siluae metu.
of the forest and the breezes
nam seu mobilibus veris inhorruit
for whether the arrival of spring has trembled with inconstant leaves
adventus foliis, seu virides rubum
or whether green lizards
dimovere lacertae,
have moved a bramble
et corde et genibus tremit.
it trembles with both its heart and knees
atqui non ego te tigris ut aspera
nevertheless I do not chase you as a fierce tiger
Gaetulusve leo frangere persequor:
or as a Gaetulian lion to break you.
tandem desine matrem
At last you ripe for man,
tempestiva sequi viro.
